Bentley Hybrids – Flock History

Bentley Hybrid Rams are bred solely for the commercial farmer. This flock is lambed in March/April and immediately turned out to grass. All lambs are reared, recorded and sold on grass alone. Our aim is to breed stock that can grow and finish as quickly as possible from forage. All rams are performance recorded and sold with individual EBV’s.

To add extra vigour and extra muscling, we have used Top 1% Charollais rams over our Suffolk ewe lambs to produce the Bentley Hybrids. Due to the extra hybrid vigour within the ram, customers have found that Bentley Hybrids have the capacity to serve more ewes and hold their condition easily throughout the year.

Functional traits such as lambing ease, lamb vigour, foot structure, lameness, mastitis and dirty back ends have been and continue to be rigorously selected for. New Zealand Suffolk, alongside the top Charollais genetics has been used to improve these traits with great success. Once these are satisfied, EBVs are used to focus on improving growth rates, muscle depths and maternal ability. We have successfully introduced the Myomax extra muscling gene to fast track improvements to muscle depth and conformation.
